Recover files from HFS

HFS is a Hierarchical File System which is a primary version of file system used in Macintosh Operating System and also known as Mac OS Standard. It maintains the details of all the files and directories in a volume. HFS had some limitation with growing disk sizes, for that reason HFS+ format was developed as a replacement of HFS. Though it has limitations, HFS is extensively used, especially on interchange media and in software distribution. There may a situation when HFS file system volume become inaccessible on Mac OS X operating system-based computers due to which you might have lost all your data. The data loss or deletion from HFS drive may be due to some other situations like sudden/improper system shut down, operating system malfunction and virus/malware infection.

Some other reasons that causes data loss from a HFS partition is given below:

  • Unintentionally formatting or accidental deletion of files and folders that occur mainly due to human mistake.
  • Corruption in MDB i.e. Master Directory Block, that contains all the records related to volumes in a Mac machine and so this volume becomes inaccessible.
  • The virus or malicious software affects HFS partition and causes data loss.
  • Hard drive or Operating System crash due to frequent power failures can cause files or folders to apparently go missing.

  3. On main window, select "Recover Files” then select either “Recover Deleted Files” or “Recover Lost Files” on the new window. Select the drive from which you want to restore files and press Next to start file recovery procedure as shown in Figure B.

  5. Lastly,after scanning, software will show you a list of recovered files as shown in Figure C.
